Simple ceiling decor

You are not a skilled craftsman, but you want to decorate your ceiling with your own hands, don’t you? We shall try to help you.

It is not a secret that today decorating a ceiling in a flat or a house people pursue not only an esthetic target. People want to widen space, visually to raise the ceiling, to hide all problematic or ugly places. For instance, when there is an inaccurate joint between a wall and the ceiling stucco work is used to cover it.

The following stucco details are used for decoration:

  • Ceiling mouldings.
  • False beams.
  • Rosettes (stucco work around the chandelier).

Elements of ceiling decoration are made of various materials: plaster, wood, and foam plastics. They may be expensive or very expensive. But we consider décor elements made of such cheap polymer as foam plastics. Foam plastics is a general name for polyurethane and polystyrene. Decorating the ceiling with foam plastics (polyurethane) is an important finish of your repairing work. Wide foam plastics mouldings visually increase a low ceiling.

Do-it-yourself stucco decoration for the ceiling is an excellent decision. Stucco décor looks really stunning in a room with the high ceiling. But there are pattern designs, many of them, that wonderfully fit modern typical flats too. Ceiling elements made of foam plastics, foamed polyurethane (a material similar to plaster) and foamed polystyrene (an inexpensive plastics) may be fixed in place with glue, silicone sealant, liquid nails or finishing putty. Also we shall consider decorating ceilings with tapestry material.

Ceiling moldings are attached when finishing is completed. They remarkably cover all imperfections, traces of glue, defects between the ceiling and walls. The manufacturers produce foam plastics mouldings of expanded polystyrene, an inexpensive and light material. These stucco decoration elements may be flat or convex relief.

Designers use molding to make a room look larger or smaller. For instance, if you want visually to enlarge a room, it is better to use fillet of the same color with wall-paper or walls.

You have two variants: to buy ceiling moldings of the same color with walls or to paint them with your own hands the color you like. In the last case it is better to select primed molding because it is easier to paint. If walls and the ceiling have many decoration elements, bright colors, ornaments, a plain foam plastics ceiling moulding will suit better than a convex relief one. Another alternative is flexible polyurethane moulding. It is usually used in houses to make a room or arch oval or round.

Ceiling mouldings

What is molding? It is another name for ceiling plinth. These are attached panels of various forms used for decoration of ceilings, walls, doors and arches. Mouldings made of foam plastics are usually white, like the ones on the photograph. Sometimes the stucco is decorated with a small amount of gold paint. This deco element is usually primed during a manufacturing process. So it can be painted any color. Mouldings are usually glued on the joint between the ceiling and wall. They may be also used to divide surfaces into zones.

Modern polyurethane stucco allows conceal power wires, feeding cables, wiring – all elements that spoil the refreshed beauty after the repair. Polyurethane is a light and easy to mount material. It is also inexpensive, and that is important. White moulding excellently matches a white ceiling and light colored walls. If you choose dark moulding and plinth of the same color, the room will look more solid and austere. Polyurethane stucco (mouldings, rosettes, fillets) is easy and quick to install.

For the installation it is necessary:

  1. To clean the working area of the wall and ceiling of dirt and whitewashing.
  2. To attach the decoration elements to the ceiling using “Soudatherm” adhesive, polymeric glues “Titan”. Apply some glue on the polyurethane moulding. Then press it to the surface and quickly tear it away. Let the glue dry for 40 – 45 seconds. Then connect the glued surfaces.
  3. Liquid nails provide an excellent result too.
  4. Another variant is acrylic putty.
  5. It can be used not only to fix stucco, but also to fill small gaps and cracks.

False beams (Beams)

Decorative polyurethane beams look very much like stucco of natural hardwood. But they are much easier to work with than wooden ones. False beams help optically raise low ceilings or separate one room zone from another.

Their main benefits are:

  1. Beams are not afraid of moisture and keep their shape well.
  2. One more advantage is that beams withstand fungus and mold.
  3. Polyurethane beams are lightweight and are easier to fit.
  4. The beams are hollow and that makes possible to eliminate roughness and defects of the ceiling.
  5. You can hide piping and electric wiring inside the beams.
  6. You can install the beams with your own hands without the help of a specialist. Polyurethane beams are fire-safe.
  7. They can be used for mounting ceiling lighting.

Decorative beams of polyurethane make living space look cozy and stylish.

Rosettes

Rosettes are stucco elements installed where chandeliers or lamps are attached. Usually it is the center of the ceiling. Polyurethane rosettes are mostly of a round shape, but not always. Many manufacturers produce stucco collections. Items belonging to one collection look better and more beautiful. Rosettes of polyurethane are light and do not soak moisture. They are suitable not only for living-rooms, but also for kitchens, bathrooms and dining-rooms. Wall borders are another type of décor elements.

Fabric

A ceiling can be decorated with fabric in two ways: with glue or using a frame. Method 1 means gluing the fabric to the ceiling surface. The fabric should be of light color and it should be ironed to look smooth and beautiful. The fabric pieces are connected edge-to edge, like wallpaper. Stretch the fabric full length and press it to the ceiling surface.

With the second method the fabric is attached to the wooden frame or professional metallic or plastic fittings. You can create a canopy or waves. Any fabric will do, though light transparent or semi-transparent material looks better. Inserts of fabric on the ceiling surface look great! The inserts may be of any size, they require small amount of fabric. View the photo showing various methods of decoration.
