Six unexpected signs of a creative person

If you are constantly biting, nervous and do not control the creative process, maybe you are a really creative person.

Six unexpected signs of a creative person

You are sarcastic

Contrary of the fact that sarcasm is considered to be the most unpleasant form of wit, it requires considerable mental exertion. Franco-American study named: «The highest form of intelligence: Sarcasm improves creativity for both expressers and recipients» showed that participants of a sarcastic conversation have their abstract thinking activated and creativity increased.

The additional conclusion to which scientists came: sarcasm provokes a conflict between not very close people, but this doesn’t happen with those who have established a trusting relationship. So you can boldly troll friends – this is only to the profit of your creative side.

You are neurotic

Neuroticism is deemed to be not the most positive trait: it is characterized by emotional instability and anxiety. However, researchers of «Thinking too much: self-created thought as the engine of neuroticism» from the UK and the USA note that this feature of personality is also highly associated with imagination and creativity.

And what is the point? Roughly speaking, it’s necessary to have a wonderful fantasy to be able to constantly invent threats.

You have your head in the clouds

Moshe Bar, a professor who researched «Increasing propensity to mind-wander with transcranial direct current stimulation» (a wandering mind is a state where a human is captured in his thoughts, not concentrated solely on the task or the environment) notes: «Daydreaming is NOT Just A Waste Of Time». Her Study finds that such a state involves many plots of the brain. And this is greatly useful for creativity.

It is interesting that the brain with “wanderings” continues to successfully cope with routine matters. You are well acquainted with this, if you at least once washed dishes.

You are easily distracted

American scientists made a research connected with this notion. In appliance with the results of the study «Creativity and sensory gating indexed by the P50: Selective versus leaky sensory gating in divergent thinkers and creative achievers», creative individuals are really easily distracted by extraneous signals. We all remember Marcel Proust, who locked himself in a cork-plated room and wore earplugs to work in silence.

Researchers denote that heightened sensitivity is useful for creators: with its help they can feel the world more distinctly. But at big cost!

You are open to different people and ideas

Researchers of collective reasoning assert: «Innovation is in the collective brain», what means: innovation is not the creation of a talented geniuses, but of the whole collective. In other words, innovations arise through communication and exchanging of ideas.

One of the authors of the study urges: if you want to be inimitably creative, talk to humans with whom you disagree.

It isn’t needed to take these words literally. But if you are surely ready to hear and listen to different opinions, you doubtless have more chances of creating something extraordinary.

Do not influence the process

The less you control the creative process, the better is the result. Approximately to this conclusion came scientists who watched the work of the brain within the drawing.

For their experiment called: «Penology-based fMRI paradigm to study the neural correlates of spontaneous improvisation and figural creativity» they asked the subjects to graphically explain different words. The most creative work came from those who knowingly did not influence the situation.

«The activation of the centers for the absolute activation of the brain – the zones that are accountable for managing, organizing, planning the actions – is negatively related to the creative implementation of the task» – noted the researchers of the study «The Creativity Secret That Most People Do not Know».

Simultaneously, an unexpectedly important role in that work was played by the cerebellum, the region accountable for the coordination of relocations. That is, more creative results obtained those who were engaged in creating the picture, but did not think about it.
