14 TV series that will make you really scared

Picaster.com has picked the eeriest, bloody and mystical TV series, especially for fearless horror fans.

The Walking Dead

The Walking Dead

Horror, thriller, drama.
USA, 2010.
Duration: 7 seasons.
IMDb: 8.5.

The TV series is a long-liver, telling about a small group of survivors after the start of the zombie apocalypse. Heroes must confront a world full of dangerous monsters and even more dangerous people.

The authors didn’t stint on high-quality makeup and special effects: zombies in the TV series are really disgusting and frightening. The plot is at the height, significantly superior to the thoughtful scenarios of any grindhouse films. “The Walking Dead” easily frighten even the most inveterate daredevils.

The spin-off “Fear the Walking Dead” was launched in 2015 for fans of the project, describing the struggle for the survival of the divorced teacher, his bride, and her two children. The TV series tells about the first days after the beginning of the epidemic and actually anticipates the events of the original. “The Walking Dead” will return with the eighth season on October 22nd.

American Horror Story

Horror, thriller, drama.
USA, 2011.
Duration: 7 seasons.
IMDb: 8.2.

Famous anthology TV series, each season of which tells an independent story. They were dedicated to a murder house, a psychiatric hospital, modern witches, an ominous show of freaks, a bloody hotel and paranormal phenomena. The seventh season of last year’s elections in the US started on September 5.

Fans of the show joke that trailers to the “American horror story” are much more interesting than the TV series: as we approach the end of the season, the quality of the narrative sometimes falls sharply. Nevertheless, the TV series is an icon of television horror movies with a unique representation and numerous visual finds.

Black Mirror

Black Mirror

Fantasy, thriller, drama.
Great Britain, 2011.
Duration: 3 seasons.
IMDb: 8.9.

The British TV series is an anti-utopia about the dangers of a new technological future. Each episode of the show is a separate and complete story related to the penetration of the Internet, virtual reality, new devices and other technologies into our lives. The very name of the TV series hints at the glossy screen of a smartphone, monitor or TV, in which each of us looks more than ten times a day.

The stories of the episodes vary from satirical to shocking, while maintaining a traditional pessimistic tone. Among the most creepy episodes are the special issue “White Christmas” (2014), “The Entire History of You” (season 1), “White Bear” (season 2), and “Playtest”, “Shut Up and Dance” and “Men Against Fire”(season 3).

Penance (Shokuzai)

Horror, detective.
Japan, 2012.
Duration: 1 season.
IMDb: 7.2.

At the school is found a dead little girl. The four best friends were with her in time of misfortune, but they can’t remember the face of the murderer. The victim’s mother puts an ultimatum to them: find the attacker or pay the penalty for letting him escape. After that, history makes a leap forward for 15 years.

We again meet the four girls who grew up and now live a nightmarish life. Each has a painful relationship with men, each waiting for an inevitable scenario, which invariably ends with murder.

The horror in the “Penance” is exclusively psychological and very Japanese. The director and screenwriter Kiyoshi Kurosawa filled this mini TV series with unceasing tension and a sense of sadness.

Hannibal

Hannibal

Detective, thriller, drama.
USA, 2013.
Duration: 3 seasons.
IMDb: 8.6.

The TV series introduces us to a young FBI employee, Will Graham, able to penetrate the feelings of serial killers. During the work on another case, his colleague becomes a psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter, who manages to secretly commit sophisticated murders and prepare from his victim’s dishes of stunning beauty. The procedural approach of the first season is then replaced by the analysis of the relationship between Hannibal and the Will who had already grasped him.

The TV series is based on the novel “Red Dragon” by Thomas Harris. In “Hannibal” Mads Mikkelsen brilliantly played the role of an inventive maniac psychologist with a refined inner world and insane ideas.

Penny Dreadful

Horrors, fantasy, drama.
United States, Ireland, United Kingdom, 2014.
Duration: 3 seasons.
IMDb: 8.5.

Atmospheric gothic horrors about demons and black magic. The action takes place in the London of the Victorian era, where we meet an adventures seeker Ethan. He performs a mysterious job for Sir Malcolm and his miserable companion miss Ives. The story is complemented by two more characters: the thrill seeker and ever-young decadent Dorian Gray and Dr. Frankenstein, who met face to face with one of his creations.

Skirmishes with demons and frightening rituals are depicted in a thoughtful and original way. Blood, violence, and erotica coexist with lyrical and philosophical scenes, no less fascinating and shocking. Not surprisingly, medieval horror movies are always in demand.

Les témoins

Les témoins

Crime, detective.
France, Belgium, 2014.
Duration: 1 season.
IMDb: 7.3.

Creepy French thriller isn’t for the faint of heart. In a small coastal town, unknown people dig out several bodies of tombs and seat them in a non-residential house, depicting a family dinner. And this is the second such case in the last month. On the table next to the bodies is a photograph of the recently retired detective Paul Maisonneuve. But for him came hard times without this: he became a widower, spoiled his relationship with son and got into a car accident, because of what he spent two weeks in a coma.

Cold and gray tone, a pretty investigator with an unsettled personal life, a methodical criminal and insane plot twists put the TV series on a par with the Danish “Bron/Broen” and “Forbrydelsen”. At the same time, the “Les témoins” is distinguished by a much more creepy plot. Don’t watch the show during cloudy evenings, otherwise, you will not get rid of gloomy thoughts and despondency for a long time.

Jordskott

Fantasy, thriller, drama, crime.
Sweden, Finland, Great Britain, Norway, 2015.
Duration: 1 season.
IMDb: 7.2.

The Swedish mystical hit of 2015, the second season of which should be released this year.

Police officer Eva Thörnblad, whose daughter was missing seven years ago, returns to her hometown for the funeral of her father. There she finds out that another child has recently disappeared, but the local police deny the possible interconnection of the two tragedies.

“Jordskott” isn’t just a detective story. It combines the detective work and supernatural elements from Swedish folklore. The viewer’s task is to bring together the history that affects the interests of timber processing enterprises, a conspiracy of the government and centuries-old forces of nature.

Scream: The TV Series

Scream: The TV Series

Horror, thriller, drama, detective.
USA, 2015.
Duration: 2 seasons.
IMDb: 7.3.

Adaptation of the cult film “Scream” by Wes Craven from MTV. The creator of the original franchise himself participated in the creation of the TV series as an executive producer.

The plot is quite predictable: another killer in a mask turns the life of a group of teenagers into a nightmare. The authors quite succeeded in modernizing the story, retaining black humor and supporting suspense throughout all of the episodes.

The television version of the slashers has to stretch the storyline and remind us that we are still watching the horrors. Therefore, the show can only interest the youngest audience, which is unfamiliar with the original.

Channel Zero

Horror, thriller, drama.
USA, 2016.
Duration: 2 seasons.
IMDb: 7.1.

The TV series is an anthology, each season of which is dedicated to one of the horror stories found on the Internet. They are called Creepypastas and are usually published on anonymous imageboards.

In the first season, a child psychologist Mike begins to suspect that the popular children’s show in the 80’s can be directly related to the numerous disappearances of children. The second season tells of an eerie No-End House, which intends to visit the main character Margot along with friends.

“Channel Zero” masterfully instills and maintains a sense of anxiety, playing on archetypal images, reviving memories of childhood fears that seem more acute and real than ever.

Outcast

Horrors, mysticism, drama.
USA, 2016.
Duration: 2 seasons.
IMDb: 7.6.

Mystical TV series based on the comics of “The Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman. However, instead of bloody zombies, it’s dedicated to disembodied demons and their obsessive victims. One such victim is the protagonist Kyle Barnes, who since childhood has been under the power of evil forces. With the help of a local priest, he tries to understand himself and his past.

Thriller frightens not by visual scenes, but rather a psychological research of a complex inner world and suspense. It turns out that the whole city in one way or another is in contact with evil spirits.

Au dela des murs

Horror, detective, drama.
France, 2016.
Duration: 1 season.
IMDb: 7.0.

Au dela des murs

A three-part French horror film that combines a story about a haunted house and elements of stories about a portal into a different dimension. A young French woman from a stranger inherits an old mansion. During the visit, she breaks one of the walls in the bedroom, finding herself in a trap in the style of “Alice in Wonderland” with an endless labyrinth of rooms and hiding demons in the corners.

Slasher

Horror, thriller, drama.
United States, United Kingdom, Canada, 2016.
Duration: 1 season.
IMDb: 6.7.

The main character Sarah Bennett and her husband return to their parents’ house, where a ruthless maniac killed her whole family when she was a child. Then the killer was caught and now is in a jail. But Sarah finds out after the arrival that the town got a new villain the Executioner, who kills the most notorious sinners. Sarah takes on the role of a detective-amateur and with the help of the condemned Tom Winston tries to get to the maniac.

Judging by the name, the TV series will not upset slasher lovers, although it has a rather boring component.

Cardinal

Thriller, drama, crime.
USA, 2017.
Duration: 1 season.
IMDb: 7.7.

Canadian criminal drama, based on the Giles Blunt’s novels. The detective John Cardinal, previously excluded from the investigation into the child disappearance, is forced to return to the service. The body of the missing girl is found in the lake after 13 years, and the investigation leads the hero to a serial killer.

“Cardinal” is surprisingly frank in depicting terrible scenes of torture and violence. The killer’s lair produces the hardest impression, and the mockery of the victim looks too realistic. The dialogues, the make-up of actors and the view of the snow-covered Canadian town help to sharpen the already horrible sensations of viewing this pseudo-snuff.
